Overview

The Tamur River Rafting and its tributaries drain the snows of Kanchenjunga third highest peak in the world. The river is the sixth largest river in Nepal and seems to have a feeling of thrusting power and of being constrained by its valley sides.

Tamur and its tributaries have a steep gradient and are probably only of interest to expedition kayakers. Downstream from Dobhan the gradient is more reasonable, but the river profile is unusual in that the river is steeper in the last 30km before its confluence with the Sun Koshi. The Kabelli River adds about a quarter to the volume of the river but from here down there are no substantial tributaries.

The valley itself is beautiful and un-spoilt with relatively few villages and little agriculture. Valley sides are well wooded there are good beaches for camping and plentiful signs of wildlife. Local people are a fascinating collage of tribes and castes. Local don’t see lot of westerners and are very welcoming.

Accessibility and Location

By bus 16-18 hr journey first transfer to Basantapur from Kathmandu and combine 3 day trekking to put in point Dovan, start 155km river rafting action, which takes 6 -7 day and end the trip at Chatara. The return journey from the take-out point takes appr. 14-16 hr long drive by bus to Kathmandu. For alternate way it is also possible to arrange flight from Biratnagar about 1:30 hr Chatara to airport and 40 minute STOL flight in extra cost.

River Description

The Tamur River Rafting originated from the famous third highest peak of the world Mt kanchenjunga which is most powerful and exciting sixth largest river in Nepal. The sceneries witnessed during the trek way to the Milke Danda- Gupha Pokhari in eastern part of Nepal on the way of rafting put-in point is awe inspiring as the river itself. The sides of the valleys are settled with few villages and very few agriculture activities can be seen throughout the entire trip. There huge range of biodiversity formed abundant flora and fauna, clean beaches for camping along the rafting.

The river flows down through massive gorges towards south-west direction and it cut its way through the 2000-meter high Mahavarat Range of mid-hill near by Tribeni- Baraha kshetra then leaves it when it spreads out over the great plain of the Ganges of Indian plate.

The different whitewater adventure seekers can enjoy its tough and thrilling grade 4 and 5- rapids along the entire non-stop river action trip. Tamur rafting trip can be also combined with kanchenjunga region trek.
