ABC Mardi Himal Trek combines two popular trekking packages of Annapurna Sanctuary trek. Mardi Himal trek and Annapurna Base Camp trek can also be done separately. However, in the recent days, they are combined to take you to Machhapuchhre Base Camp as well.

How difficult is ABC Mardi Himal Trek?

ABC Mardi Himal Trek difficulty is level moderate or medium type. To know about its difficulty, you need to consider some factors creating some hard situations. Trekking hours, teahouses or lodges, altitude, condition of the trails, etc. are some major ones.

The condition of the trails is fine and spacious except in some sections. They are most often walked by the national and international trekkers. Then, it moves along the ethnic villages of the Gurung, Magar, Chhetri and Brahmin's. After getting your permits check at Birethanti, you trek to Ghandruk. Ghandruk is one of the largest Gurung Villages of Nepal. There, you can visit the Gurung Museum and meet with the Brave Gurkhas.

After that, you move to Chhomrong, Dobhan, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and finally to Annapurna Base Camp. Spending a night at Annapurna Base Camp, you trek down to Dobhan and move to Jhinu Danda.

From Jhinu Danda, you divert the journey towards Forest Camp of Mardi Himal Base Camp trek route. Next, you ascend to High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp from where you have the closest view of Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993 m).

Getting the lifelong experiences of the Himalayas of Annapurna Massif, you trek down to High Camp. Then, the trail takes you to Siding Village, Lumre Village and Pokhara. From Pokhara, you either drive or fly back to Kathmandu.

Apart from the natural and cultural richness, trekking in Nepal, Annapurna region is an opportunity to meet with the Brave Gurkhas as well. The majority of population in this region is the Gurung and Magar ethnic communities. Since before the First World War, the Gurung and Magar males have been recruited in the British and Indian Armies.

Therefore, they fought bravely in both the World Wars from the British side. Yes, the war is never good for anybody, and it is always destructive! However, the Gurung and Magar males accomplished their duties courageously and honestly. That’s why, they earned their title “the Brave Gurkhas!” Even today, the Nepalese are known as the Gurkhas all over the world.

Itinerary

The representative of Nepal Trekking Routes receives you at the Kathmandu Airport on the arrival day. After that, he will shift you to the hotel. If the time favours, you can visit Thamel Bazar on your own. Later on, the team leader comes to you and gives briefing about Mardi Himal Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary.

You begin today’s journey towards Annapurna region after having breakfast. You can drive along the Prithvi Highway up to Pokhara and then towards Nayapul. You know Nayapul is the place from where you begin Annapurna Base Camp trek or other treks of Annapurna region.

From Nayapul, you begin Mardi Himal Annapurna Base Camp trek formally. Walking along the comfortable trail for about 30 minutes, you reach Birethanti. It is a small traditional village having unique styled houses. There is the checkpoint of Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Entry Permit.

By crossing the terraced fields and Syauli Bazar, you reach Kyumi, a village populated by the Gurungs and the Brahmins. Following the snaky trail moving uphill and downhill, you will walk past some terraced farmlands and small settlement areas. At the end of the trek, you reach Ghandruk, one of the largest Gurung villages of Annapurna region.

Here, you can visit the Gurung Museum and converse with the local people to know about their history. You might meet some old Brave Gurkhas who will narrate some interesting stories while they were serving in the British and Indian armies.

From this hamlet, you will have the panoramic view of some prominent peaks of Annapurna Massif. Some of them are Annapurna South (7229m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Annapurna III (7755m), Glacier dome (7200m) and Fishtail (6,997m). overnight stay at a Gurung homestay.

Following the steep trail, you will ascend to Komrong Danda (2,100m). Then, the trail descends along the Komrong Khola and again ascend to Chhomrong Village. It is a nice Gurung village serving you with the enthralling view of the Annapurna Range on fine days.

You begin the trip today by following the trails along the Chhomrong Khola banks. Then, by crossing the dense forests of pine and rhododendron, you reach Sinuwa Village.

Moving ahead through the bamboo forests, you cross Bamboo Village. Again, by walking alongside the oak and rhododendron woodlands, you reach Dobhan. “Dobhan” (Dovan) is a Nepali word meaning ‘Confluence of two streams or rivers’.

Moving along the banks of the Modi Khola, you cross Himalaya Hotel, a stop during Annapurna Base Camp trek. From here, you walk past Hinku Cave to reach Deurali. Then, leaving the avalanche prone section, you ascend to Machhapuchhre Base Camp.

Reaching the base camp of Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993m) is also an important reward of this trek. You know, it is one of the highest unclimbed peaks in the world.  From here, you will witness the majestic view of Mt. Hiunchuli, Annapurna I (8,091m) & III, Gangapurna and Mt. Machhapuchhre itself.

Spending a few hours here, you continue the trek towards Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). The trail that goes past the bamboo forests and Annapurna Sanctuary. By relishing the panoramic view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri (8,167m) Mountain Ranges, you reach Annapurna Base Camp. Enjoy the sunset view of the Giant Peaks of the Annapurna Massif just in front of you!

You have your breakfast and continue descending towards Dobhan. You will follow the same trail you used yesterday and enjoy the same scenery of the Himalayas and landscapes.

Walking along the pine, oak and rhododendron forests of Annapurna Sanctuary, you continue the journey. On the way, you might have the glimpses of some birds and animals of Annapurna Conservation Area.

It takes nearly 6 hours to reach Jhinu Danda from Dobhan. Jhinu Danda is famous for the natural hot pool where you can take bath to get rid of travel fatigue. Enjoy the typical food and warm hospitality of the Nepalese here!

Walking past the Kimrung Khola and some terraced fields, you reach Himal Pani Village. You will take rest by observing the natural waterfalls. Then, moving further, you will reach Landruk, a beautiful village inhabited by the Gurung, Magar and Brahmins.

Then, the steep and a bit challenging trail moves along some oak and pine forests. Finally, you reach to Forest Camp where you will check in to a community based lodges. Here, you get to taste the typical food items prepared by the Gurung people and served at the best hospitality.

Following Mardi Himal Base Camp trek route, you will move towards Low Camp and then to High Camp. The trail continues further along the terrain having some rhododendron trees. You might have some glimpses of the Himalayan monal or pheasant, which is the national bird of Nepal. From the High Camp, you have the amazing view of Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993m) and Mardi Himal (5,587m).

Today is the most remarkable day as you are going to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). You begin the trek as early as you can to capture the sunrise view of the Annapurna (8,091m) Massif and Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993m).

Walking carefully and slowly, you ascend towards the base camp of Mardi Himal by enjoying the first sunrays over Annapurna Massif. When you reach the top, you will have the closest appearance of Mt. Machhapuchhre. It seems as if you can touch this virgin peak with your hand!

After storing the lifelong memory of Mardi Himal Base Camp trek view, you trek down to High Camp. In this way, you next target for lifelong experiences of trekking in Annapurna region comes true!

Descending through the Low Camp and some rhododendron forests, you will arrive in Siding Village. Then, moving along the Modi Khola banks, you will enjoy the view of the Himalayas and lovely landscapes.

Siding is a beautiful Gurung village situated on the lap of the Annapurna Massif.  It is famous for its homestay facilities. Siding homestay facility lets you taste the delicious cuisines prepared and served by the local people. You can also learn the culture, tradition and lifestyle of the local people while sharing the same kitchen with them!

Walking along the rugged trails moving through the terraced farmlands and some forested land, you trek down to Lumre Village. From here, you catch a bus that takes back to Pokhara. After arriving in Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the spare time, you can visit some places of the Lake City.

According to your deal with the agency, you can either fly or drive to Kathmandu from Pokhara. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, the team member relocates you to the hotel. In the remaining time, you can take a visit of Thamel to purchase some unique gifts to your people in the home country. They may be garments, statue or any other products of the Nepalese art and craft. In the evening, you will be invited to farewell dinner at a cultural restaurant somewhere around Thamel.

As per your flight schedule, the crewmember of the our trekking company takes you to the Kathmandu Airport.

Yes, you can. You can do Mardi Himal Annapurna Base Camp Trek independently as there is not any restricted area in it. However, if you are a beginner for trekking in Nepal, you had better hire a professional trekking guide.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Entry Permit and TIMS Card are the two permits you need for this trek. You can get them from Tourist Service Center in Kathmandu and Pokhara by paying the cost in Nepalese Currency or US Dollars.

Mardi Himal Annapurna Base Camp Trek is not time-bound, i.e. you can do it all times of the year. In summer season, the trails may be muddy due to the shower. In winter, the mist and clouds may obstruct the clear view of the Himalayas and green forests. Therefore, spring and autumn are the best time for this trek for stunning view and festival treks as well.
