Tourism is known to be one of the strongest pillars in maintaining the economy of Nepal. Nepal Tourism is known to have supported over 1 million jobs in 2018 as per the annual report of the World Travel and Tourism Council. Also, it stated that the tourism industry contributed to a total of 7.9% of the GDP of Nepal in the same year, which shows the significance of tourism in Nepal. Nepal Travel Industry has a strong tie with the effects of infection of Corona Virus in Nepal.  In the onset of the dreaded pandemic-Covid-19, the Nepal Travel industry has been hit hard. Empty streets of Thamel and Baidam and canceled flights are a pinch to the tourism industry. Chinese tourists are known to contribute a lot to the Nepal Travel Industry. After China banned international travel, both exit, and entry, Nepal has seen a plummet in visitors, hotel occupancy and flights. Suspending air travel from China and eventually, all countries mean that the promotional campaigns for Visit Nepal 2020 have come to an end.

There were many plans set forth by the Tourism sector in Nepal for Visit Nepal 2020. With the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign, the economy of Nepal was set to be boosted by 8.5% for the fiscal year.

Trips - How has the Corona Virus in Nepal affected the Nepal Travel Industry?

The global Covid-19 pandemic was identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and took a rise in the European countries and other continents eventually. Declared by WHO, a pandemic on 11th March 2020, the Covid-19 corona virus has taken a toll around the world. As of March 19, 2020, there are over two hundred thousand confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection all over the world. However, Nepal has only seen a single confirmed case confirmed on January 24, 2020, and resolved as of now. Nepal has not seen any other positive cases of Covid-19. The government has been taking precaution to prevent the spread of disease in various ways. However, it is upsetting that the much-awaited and cherished Visit Nepal 2020, has come to a halt-but only a temporary one. Nepal Travel Industry has taken a hard hit from the effect of Corona Virus in Nepal and the world. 

Status of Corona Virus case in Nepal: 

  • On January 5, 2020, while China saw an increase in the Covid-19 confirmed cases, Nepal confirmed only one case from a student studying at Wuhan University, who was later discharged on 17th January 
  • In the mid of January, health desks were set up at the Tribhuvan International Airport to screen the passengers coming from China, Thailand, and Japan. 
  • The Rasuwagadhi border with China was closed down on 28th January
  • All the private and public hospitals have been provided guidelines to strictly follow in suspected new cases 
  • The government of Nepal is said to have devised a contingency plan to curb the virus on 14th February 
  • Health personnel and Medical officers have been deployed at major tourist hubs like the hospitals, hotels, and airports of Pokhara, Chitwan, and Bhairawa along with Kathmandu. 
  • Nepal suspended visa-on-arrival for nationals of China South Korea, Japan, Italy and Iran which were reported to be affected most as of 1st March 
  • Nepal Government suspended visa-on-arrival for all countries except official and diplomatic visa on 12th March 2020
  • From March 14, the government decided to cancel all spring mountain climbing expedition until 30 April 2020. 
  • India has suspended all movements of India through its border in Nepal from March 15, 2020.
