The Annapurna Sunrise View trek is one of those experiences that does not really explains itself until you are already standing at Poon Hill in the dark, waiting for a view that is still completely hidden.

Ghorepani is where most people spend the night before the sunrise hike, but the interesting part is when you look out early morning and there is already a line of people moving up the trail while it is still dark enough that you are mostly guessing where the path is. That is when it hits that you are not the only one who came for that sunrise you keep hearing about, and everyone around you is there for the exact same reason.

Overview of Annapurna Sunrise trek

Attempting the Annapurna Sunrise View Trek is much more than the best sunrise view of the glorious mountains. It is a moderate trek in Nepal which means it is suitable for anyone who is wanting a family trek.

The culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the Gurung, Magar, Chhetri, and Brahmin communities are the cultural beauties of this trek. Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Tadapani are the classic villages you go past during Annapurna Sunrise View Trek.

This trek can also be called Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek as the Ghorepani and Poon Hill are the major attractions of this route. You get to see beautiful rhododendron forests in Ghorepani and the undoubtedly the best sunrise view from Poon Hill.

The thrilling views of the Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), and Mt. Fishtail (6,993 m) makes the trek absolutely worth it.The natural hot spring of Jhinu Danda gives you a unique experience of bathing with the fresh hot water.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek is a purely customizable trip that can be done together with Annapurna Base Camp Trek or Mardi Himal Trek. It can also be connected with Pokhara or Kathmandu sightseeing tour as well.

Major Highlights of Annapurna Sunrise View Trek in Nepal

  • Sunrise from Poon Hill at 3,210m with wide views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and other nearby peaks
  • Early morning walk from Ghorepani where you see a long line of trekkers heading up before daylight
  • Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu
  • Trail moving through the Annapurna Conservation Area with changing landscapes
  • Villages such as Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, each giving a different feel of mountain life
  • Long stone stair climb between Birethanti and Ulleri that most trekkers remember clearly from the first day
  • Rhododendron growth between Ulleri and Ghorepani, which is especially noticeable in spring when the forest changes color
  • Option to stop at Jhinu Danda for the natural hot spring on the return journey
  • Known more for the Poon Hill sunrise than difficulty, which is why it stays popular as a short Annapurna trek in Nepal

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Cost

Annapurna Sunrise Trek is completely a tea house trekking in Nepal. The tea houses in the Annapurna Region are recognized for their more than basic services of food and accommodation to the tourists. However, the cost of food and accommodation is not as high as in Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek.

With Nepal Trekking Routes, the Annapurna Sunrise View Trek costs around USD 600 per person on a discounted package. This covers permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area, tea house stays, meals during the trek, and a licensed guide from Pokhara.

Drinks, snacks, WiFi, hot showers, and tips are not included and are paid during the trek.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Itinerary

The itinerary of Annapurna Sunrise view trek can be shortened or extended depending on individual preference. The itinerary can range from as short as 4 days to a longer version of 15 days. This trek can also be extended to cover the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

The Annapurna Sunrise View Trek itinerary can be managed depending on how you want the trip to go and how much time you have. The route, main stops, accommodation, meals, and permits are all arranged based on current conditions so everything fits together properly. Before finalising, the plan is checked again to make sure it actually works on the ground and small changes are made if anything does not line up well.

Best Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Packages

These packages are just different ways of organising the same trek. The route stays identical for everyone, whether you go budget or luxury. What changes is how much is arranged for you in advance and the level of comfort you choose before and after the walk.

Budget Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Package

A budget package means the trek is arranged in a way where the focus is only on completing the route with all basic requirements covered. It is the most common option for people who are fine with simple travel conditions and do not need extra comfort.

This package includes a licensed guide, permits, tea house accommodation along the route, and shared transport between Pokhara and the trail starting point. The rooms are basic and shared with other trekkers, and you stay in standard local lodges available in each village. There is not much services included as that will increase the overall budget.

Standard Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Package

A standard package means the trek is organised with a better balance between cost and comfort. It still follows the same tea house system, but there is more attention given to selecting better available rooms and managing the daily plan in a smoother way.

It generally includes a licensed guide, porters, permits, tea house accommodation with better room selection when available, all meals during the trek, and more comfortable yet public transport arrangements between Pokhara and the starting point, but if you are in a group, private vehicle can also be arranged. The actual trek experience does not change, but the overall coordination feels more structured than the budget trek.

Luxury Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Package

A luxury package means the trek is designed to keep the walking experience the same while improving everything around it. However, you should understand that it does not change the route itself, but about adding comfort before the trek starts and after it ends, along with best possible arrangements and accommodations available on the trail.

This includes a licensed guide, permits, porters, best tea house accommodation during the trek, meals, private transport instead of shared vehicles, and higher and luxury 4 star hotel stays in Pokhara and Kathmandu before and after the trek. In some villages, better room options are arranged when available, but the trail experience itself stays unchanged.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek
Essential Information

Best Time for Annapurna Sunrise View Trekking

This trek does not really depend on a perfect month in theory, it depends on how often the mountains decide to stay visible at sunrise. Some days you get a full line of peaks, other days you get a slow fade in and out behind cloud.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek in Spring Season (March to May)

The walk between Ulleri and Ghorepani feels different in spring because the forest is filled with rhododendron (national flower of Nepal), and that part of the trail becomes even prettier than usual. Early mornings at Poon Hill still carry a cold bite, but that is normal at that height and time of day. This season is one of the most favorable seasons to trek in Nepal.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek in Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn is one of the popular times for the Annapurna Region treks. Most people pick this season because the early morning views open more often. The Poon Hill climb before sunrise is the main moment, with clearer sightlines across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges compared to other times of the year. It also brings more trekkers on the trail, especially around Ghorepani.

Off Season Trekking in the Annapurna Region of Nepal

Off season trekking on the Annapurna Sunrise View Trek is basically when you are not going in the busy months, so there are fewer people on the trail and the whole experience depends more on how the weather turns out each day.

In Annapurna Sunrise trek during winter, the biggest thing people notice is the cold at Poon Hill before sunrise. Standing there and waiting for the first light can feel much longer than it actually is. On some mornings the mountains are visible from the start, while on others they take their time to appear.

Monsoon and summer bring a different side of the trail. The forests around Ulleri and Ghorepani feel greener, the air feels heavier, and mountain views become harder to count on. Some trekkers get lucky with a clear morning at Poon Hill, while others spend most of sunrise looking into cloud.

Accommodation During the Trek

Throughout the trek, you will be staying in tea houses in villages such as Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk. These lodges are run by local families and have been hosting trekkers on this route for years.

The rooms are fairly basic, which is what most people expect once they leave the city behind. You will usually get a twin sharing room with beds, blankets, and enough space to keep your backpack. Some lodges have attached bathrooms, while others use shared facilities, so the experience can vary from one stop to the next.

Most evenings end up looking quite similar. People arrive from the trail, sit down for dinner, order a cup of tea, compare the day's walk, and head to bed early. The dining room is usually where everyone spends their time, especially in places like Ghorepani where trekkers gather before the early morning hike to Poon Hill.

Nobody comes on this route expecting luxury accommodation, but the tea houses provide what you need after a day of walking: a warm meal, a place to sleep, and a roof over your head before setting off again the next morning.

Food During the Annapurna Sunrise Trek

You will see Dal bhat everywhere on this trail. It’s served in every tea house and most people have it at least once a day because it’s filling and always freshly made.

Menus are pretty similar in all the villages. You get things like noodles, fried rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs, soup, and basic breakfast stuff like toast and porridge. There’s not much variation between Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, just small differences depending on the lodge. You can also have tea and coffee before starting the walk in the morning or after reaching the lodge in the evening.

Annapurna Sunrise View Trek Difficulty

The Annapurna Sunrise View Trek difficulty is moderate. You are not dealing with anything technical, but you are on your feet for several days, and that builds up more than most people expect at the start.

The main effort comes after Birethanti on the way up to Ulleri, followed by walking between places like Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk where the trail keeps going up and down throughout the day.

The early morning hike to Poon Hill before sunrise feels a bit tougher than expected because it is done in the dark and you end up waiting in cold conditions at the top. Overall, it suits people with basic fitness who can handle a few hours of walking each day.

Permits Required for the Annapurna Sunrise View Trek

You need two permits for this route, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and the TIMS card.

Once you’re inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, the ACAP permit gets checked at entry points, and the TIMS card is mostly just part of your basic trek registration. After that, you just carry them along and show them if someone asks at a checkpoint.

Eco Friendly Measures for the Trek

Here are some eco friendly measures that you should practice during your visit in Nepal:

  • Trek responsibly, carry a reusable water bottle and purification tablets instead of buying plastic bottles.
  • Use biodegradable soap and avoid single use plastics.
  • Stick to designated trails to prevent soil erosion.
  • Support eco lodges and local businesses to sustain the region’s economy while preserving the environment.

Equipment Required For The Short Annapurna Sunrise Trek

Good trekking shoes are important for this route since you will be walking for several hours a day on stone paths and uneven routes.

A warm jacket is really necessary for early mornings at Poon Hill. You wait in the dark for sunrise, and it gets cold enough that most people just stand still and keep moving their hands or feet to stay warm. The same jacket is useful again in the evenings once you reach places like Ghorepani or Tadapani.

A small backpack, a water bottle, and a headlamp cover most of what people carry daily. The headlamp is mainly for that pre dawn walk to Poon Hill when it’s still dark.

We also have a separate equipment information section on our website where everything is explained in more detail, so you can check that if you want a full packing list before starting the trek.

Money Management on the Trek

ATM services are available in Pokhara, but not along the trekking route. Carry enough Nepali rupees for personal expenses, as teahouses do not accept cards. Money exchange facilities are available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Smaller notes are useful on the trail because tea houses often don’t have enough change for larger bills, especially in the smaller villages.

People & Culture of the Region

The trek passes through villages inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities. These communities are known for their warm hospitality. The culture is rich in traditions, with Buddhist prayer flags, chortens, and monasteries along the trail. Trekkers can experience local dances, traditional food, and learn about the reality of trekking routes in Nepal.

Who Is The Annapurna Sunrise Trek Suitable For?

This trek is mainly ideal for:

  • Solo travelers: To those who are wanting to trek to the annapurna region solo, this trek is safe but make sure you prepare yourself properly.
  • Families with kids: Trek offers moderate difficulty and short duration so it is also suitable for families wanting to experience the beauty of Nepalese himalayas.
  • Beginners: Trek is easy to moderate difficulty, making it perfect for beginner trekkers as well.
  • Luxury trekkers: Upgraded lodges and private transport are available.

Travel Tips for Trekking

  • Start early each morning to catch sunrise views and avoid afternoon clouds.
  • Train beforehand with cardio and leg exercises to prepare for moderate uphill climbs.
  • Hydrate well and carry a refillable bottle to avoid buying plastic.
  • Carry cash as ATMs are not available on the trail.
  • Book in advance during peak season to secure good teahouse accommodation.
  • Dress in layers as temperatures can fluctuate significantly.
  • Respect local culture by asking before taking photos and avoiding wastage of food.
  • Hire a guide or porter for safety and local insights.

Best Alternatives of the Trek

Here are some of the best alternatives of the Annapurna Sunrise View Trek in Nepal:

FAQs

It can be done throughout the year because the maximum altitude to reach in 3,210 m (Poon Hill). However, the best seasons of Annapurna Sunrise View Trek are spring and autumn. In spring, the colorful rhododendron flowers wrap the entire region as if it were a bride on her wedding day. In autumn, the weather and temperature are stable serving for the best sunrise view.

Yes, you can do. Annapurna Sunrise View Trek can be done as an individual and in an organized trek as well. The route of this trek does not enter into any restricted area trekking (RAT). However, we recommend you to do it as an organized trek to have a distinct experience.

You should bring good walking shoes because the trail has a lot of stone steps. A warm jacket is needed for cold mornings during the Poon Hill sunrise. A small backpack is enough for water and daily items. A headlamp is useful for the early morning walk in the dark. Keep some cash since card payment does not work well in villages. A power bank can help for charging your phone.

It depends upon expectation and is worth it when the weather is clear. You see a wide wall of mountains lighting up at once, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. But it is also fair to say it depends heavily on visibility. If clouds come in, it can feel underwhelming because the whole trek builds up to that one moment.

Ulleri to Ghorepani stands out for most people. You don't have to do any technical climb, just a long, continuous uphill part of the trail that feels endless when you are in it. Later on, the downhill from Tadapani and Ghandruk can also be tough on the knees.

No. First time trekkers in Nepal do this trek all the time. The main requirement is basic stamina for walking multiple days in a row. If you can handle stairs and long walks, you will manage this route pretty well.

Ghandruk feels more like a lively mountain village. It is more open, more scenic in clear weather, and has a strong Gurung cultural presence. People find it more relaxed compared to Ghorepani, which feels more like a trekking hub.

Yes, that is the whole point of it. People start walking in the dark with headlamps. It takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on your speed. If you go late, you miss the sunrise light, which is the main reason for going up.

Yes, and it is actually one of the easier treks to customize because the route has multiple villages and road links.

We, Nepal Trekking Routes, can shape it around your timing instead of forcing you into a fixed plan. If you want to reach Poon Hill faster, that can be done. If you want slower days with extra stops like Ghandruk or Jhinu hot springs, that also works.

It gets crowded in peak trekking months like October to November and March to April. You will not be alone at the top. Most people from Ghorepani go up around the same time in the dark, so when sunrise gets close, the viewpoint is already full of trekkers standing close to each other and looking for space.

It is still a good experience, but it does not feel quiet or private. You are sharing it with a lot of other trekkers who all came for the same sunrise.

Sometimes yes, sometimes partially, sometimes not at all. The clearest views usually happen early morning or after rain when the sky has been cleaned. Ghandruk and Poon Hill both offer good viewing points, but the weather decides everything more than location.
