Langtang Trek Overview

Langtang Valley Trek is one of the closest Nepal trekking destinations from Kathmandu. It is close to the border of the Tibetan Plateau, which is known as the Roof of the World. The valley boasts a unique diversity of wildlife and vegetation. The landscapes, forests, wildlife, and human settlement areas beautify this Himalayan region. Langtang Valley Trek takes you close to the Langtang Himalayan range.

This Himalayan Valley lies in Langtang National Park, the first Himalayan conservation area of Nepal. Also, the fourth protected area of the nation, this national park an estimated 2,000 flowering plants. When you plan the Langtang Valley trek in spring, the entire jungle is decorated with colorful rhododendron flowers. Different species of mammals like musk deer, snow leopard, and Himalayan Thar are also found in here.

Langtang Himalayan Range consists of 13 peaks above 5,500 m near Manaslu (8,163 m) and Ganesh Himal. Langtang Lirung (7,246 m),  Langtang II/Ghenge Liru (6,581 m), Kimshung (6,781 m), Yansa Tsenji (6,575 m) and Mt. Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m) are the major peaks seen during this trek. Although Mt. Shishapangma (8,027 m) lies on the other side of the valley, it is not visible from here.

Trekking to Langtang Valley leads you along the rugged terrain at higher altitudes. You will see sandy-brown cliffs, some Himalayan glaciers, and lakes. You visit some villages of the native Sherpa and Tamang communities. Therefore, the Langtang Valley trek is sometimes known as the Tamang Heritage trek. Langtang Valley trek begins with a hilly drive from the bustling city of Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. It takes nearly 6 hours to reach Syabrubesi along the Pasang Lhamu Highway. How difficult is Langtang Valley trek?

The Langtang Valley trek is moderately challenging trekking. The highest altitude to reach is Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) and the longest trekking duration is 6 hours. Even beginners can do this trek by following the instructions of the trekking guide. Except for some sections, the trekking in Nepal trail is well-defined and comfortable.

Reception at the Kathmandu Airport by the crew member of NTR. Then, he will relocate you to the hotel which is booked for your lodgings. After becoming fresh, you can visit Thamel on your own. In the evening, the team leader gives you briefing about Langtang Valley trek itinerary.

After having breakfast, you begin the travel towards Syabrubesi, the gateway to Langtang Valley trek, Ganesh Himal trek or Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. While driving along the Pasang Lhamu Highway, you have the captivating vista of the snowcapped peaks, high altitude villages and green forests. Ocassionally, you see the stunning view of the snowy peaks of Langtang region and Manaslu region.

To reach Lama Hotel, you follow the banks of the Langtang Khola. Walking along the uphill and downhill trail passing through the oak and rhododendron forests, you cross a bridge over the Langtang Khola. Then, following the sloppy track, you reach the destination for the night station.

While moving further from the Lama Hotel, you see a lot of natural waterfalls sprouting from the mountain landscapes. By crossing the green meadows, you reach Ghore Tabala from where you have the glimpses of the mountains of Langtang region. Then, you pass through the seasonal cattle settlement areas made by the herders to keep them in summer. Making this trip in spring, the entire forests are covered with the colourful rhododendron flowers. By walking past a local Buddhist monastery, you reach Langtang village.

Today, you trek up to one of the major attractions of the Langtang region. The rugged path takes you through small villages and meadows giving the best Himalayan views. You see Mt. Langtang Lirung on your left while Ganchenpo in front as if waiting for your arrival. By walking past several small streams and moraines, you reach Kyanjin Gompa. Kyanjin Gompa is a small village which houses a government-operated cheese factory. As today’s trekking duration is quite short, you can take a visit around the village. On the one hand, you can see the beauty of the village and on the other hand, it helps you in acclimatization purpose.

For the acclimatization purpose, you have a few things to do for getting a lifelong memory. You can visit the Kyanjin Gompa, the cheese factory and walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice ridges. Alternatively,  you can hike up to a glacial lake just three hours’ walk from the hotel. You can also visit the Langtang Lirung Glacier or ascend Kyangjin Ri (4,600m.), which is located nearby the village. Kyanjin Ri rewards you with the splendid vistas of the snowcapped peaks of Langtang region. Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Changbu and Langtang Yubra Peak (6,035m) are some of the peaks you can see. So, it is said to be the best vantage point of Langtang region trek.

The trekking trail from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel is steep downhill. To avoid any possible accident, you are advised to walk carefully. You walk past some mountain streams, forests and small Tamang Villages of Langtang region. You might have glimpses of wild animals like musk deer, snow leopard and birds like Himalayan pheasants en route.

For the first few hours, the track leads you through the dense green forests of Langtang National Park. You might see some animals and birds playing in the lush forests as well. Then, the brilliant view of the snowcapped peaks of Langtang region, Ganesh Himal and Tibetan side, too. By climbing a steep ridge, you reach Thulo Syabru for the night rest. You can visit the shops that sell souvenirs or taste local jam made by the native people of the village.

Today’s trail takes you through the thick forests and gushing Himalayan rivers. Then, you walk past a Sherpa village highly influenced by the Tibetan Buddhist culture and tradition. Walking through the uphill and downhill trail that passes through farmlands, you reach Thulu Bharku. From the village, you can relish the mesmerizing view of the Himalayas of Nepal and Tibet as well. From here, you drive to Kathmandu in a private jeep or local bus. By travelling for about 6 hours, you arrive at Kathmandu.

Then, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the spare time, you can visit around Thamel to buy some souvenirs or clothes to present to your people in home country. In the evening, the agency organizes a farewell dinner at a cultural restaurant nearby Thamel.

The Langtang Valley Trek is an exciting journey in Nepal. This trek is one of the favorites among trekkers. It offers breathtaking mountain views, cultural richness, and accessibility. Here is some essential information you need to know:

Location and Accessibility

The Langtang Valley Trek is located in Langtang National Park in North-Central Nepal near the Tibetan border. The starting point of this trek is Syabrubesi which is a 6-8 hour drive from Kathmandu. It is easily accessible from Kathmandu, which makes logistics easy and options for preparation. 

Permits Required

Langtang National Park Permit: This permit is required to enter the protected area.
Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) Card: This card is mandatory for all trekkers. 
These permits are available in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office. If you are trekking with us, Nepal Trekking Routes, then we will arrange them for you. You should provide some passport size photos and travel insurance documents.

Duration and Distance

The Langtang Valley Trek takes around 9 days depending on your pace and side trips. The trek covers a total distance of approximately 70-80 km for a round trip. The daily trekking takes 4-7 hours. 

Best Time to Trek

Spring (March-May): Spring is one of the best time to trek in Nepal. The weather is pleasant and comfortable for trekking. The rhododendrons bloom and cover the forests along the trails with hues of red, pink, and white. 

Autumn (September –November): Autumn is one of the popular seasons for trekking in Nepal. The skies are clear and visibility is excellent for panoramic views of the mountains. This season coincides with various festivals like Dashain and Tihar. You can experience the culture and festivals of Nepal. 

Summer (June-August): Summer is less popular due to frequent rain. The trail becomes wet and slippery. The leeches and mosquitoes annoy the trekkers. However, you can have unique experiences and greenery during this season.

Winter (December-February): Winter is off-peak season for trekking. The weather is cold and harsh. The trails are covered with snow and difficult to navigate. You can either avoid this season or be prepared with extra clothing and gears.

Altitude

One of the challenges of the Langtang Valley trek is altitude. Trekking above 3,500 m can lead to altitude sickness. The level of oxygen in higher altitudes is lesser, so this may cause symptoms of altitude sickness. The symptoms of altitude sickness are headaches, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, etc. 
Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness. You should ascend gradually and drink plenty of water. If the symptoms become worse, descend immediately and seek medical attention.

Weather

The weather in higher altitudes, especially near Kyanjin Gompa, changes rapidly. The unpredictable weather is challenging. 

Terrain

The Langtang Valley trek has uneven and steep trails. To overcome the challenge of rough terrain, you should have good physical fitness and sturdy gear.

Langtang Trek ranges from 8 days to 17 days depending upon your choice and time. 8 days Langtang Trek takes you up to Kyanjin Gompa and back to Kathmandu from Syabru Besi. But if you want to do Langtang Gosainkunda Helambu Trek, you need 17 days.

Yes, you can do Gosainkunda Trek with Langtang Valley Trek if you have around 17 days time to spend in Nepal. You have choice to do Gosainkunda Trek fist and then, Langtang Valley Trek or first, Langtang Trek, Gosainkunda Trek with Helmabu Circuit Trek.

While doing Langtang Gosainkunda Trek, you need 8 more days and the route diverts from Lama Hotel towards Thulo Syabru instead of Syabru Besi. After exploring Gosainkunda Lake, you can trek back to Syabru Besi to return to Kathmandu. Alternatively, you can trek to Ghopte, then Melamchi Gaon, Tarkegyang, Sermathang, Melamchi Bazaar, and drive to Kathmandu.
