The temple complex is full of prayer wheels, stupas, and monkeys, and you can feel the peaceful atmosphere while walking around the site.
  • Boudhanath Stupa - One of the largest stupas in the world, it is an important center for Tibetan Buddhism. The massive white stupa with a golden spire is surrounded by prayer wheels, monasteries, and fluttering prayer flags, creating a calm and spiritual environment.

On this day, you will take a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, the gateway to eastern Nepal. After reaching, you will then drive to Seduwa, the starting point of your trek. You will spend the night at a comfortable lodge, and rest well before the beginning of the actual trek.

You will begin your trek along the Solu River, with the gentle sound of water accompanying your steps. The rail passes small Rai villages, wooden houses, and terraced fields. As you approach Tashigaun, the village feels like a hidden gem tucked between rolling green hills, with friendly locals and cozy lodges welcoming you for the night.

Today, you will trek through lush forests and along with streams, gradually gaining altitude. After a three hour hike from Tashigaun, you will stop at Dhara for Lunch. After a few minutes rest, you will begin trekking again. You will enjoy distant views of snow capped peaks and the calm surroundings. Overnight stay in Khongma Danda.

You will continue climbing through mixed forests and small grasslands. The trail passes through traditional Rai villages, where locals may greet you warmly. The views open up gradually, revealing Makalu, Chamlang, and Baruntse as the peaks peek through clouds. Dobate offers a peaceful night, with lodges located among scenic surroundings, where you can watch the sun set behind the distant mountains.

After a good breakfast at Dobate, you will get ready for the hike to Yangle Kharka which will become a tiring ascent for a few hours. The trail passes alpine meadows, glacial streams, and rocky ridges, offering stunning views of Makalu, Chamlang, and Baruntse. You will reach Yangle Kharka, located at an altitude of 3,530-3,634 meters, a peaceful high altitude pasture where yaks graze and simple lodges are available for an overnight stay. You will spend the night there.

You will continue ascending through glacial valleys and alpine pastures, crossing streams and rocky trails. The peaks grow larger and closer, and the trail opens into wide grassland where yaks and local herders may be seen. After soaking in the scenery and taking photographs, you will descend back to Langmale Kharka for the night, carrying the memory of this incredible accomplishment.

You will descend the same way, retracing your footsteps in the trail. The walk is easier on the knees than ascending, and you can pause to enjoy the landscapes from a new perspective. Streams, forests, and grazing yaks create a peaceful backdrop as you reach Dobate for the night.

You will continue your descent through forests, streams, and small villages, hearing birdsong and the occasional call of yaks. Villagers may greet you, and you will pass terraces filled with crops swaying in the wind. The friendly lodge in Tashigaun offers a warm, restful night after a long day.

You will trek back to Seduwa, enjoying the gentler slopes, rivers, and small settlements along the way. The day is relaxing, giving you a chance to reflect on the trek so far. You may stop to photograph local life, terraced fields, and rushing streams. Overnight stay is at Seduwa.

You will drive from Seduwa to Tumlingtar, passing through lush green valleys and small villages. This is a relaxing day after several days of trekking. You will stay overnight in Tumlingtar and prepare for your flight back to Kathmandu.

Essential Information

If you want the Makalu region at its best, Spring and Autumn are the seasons to go. These months bring clear skies and comfortable walking weather which is very essential for a trekker. You won’t be dealing with heavy rain or extreme cold, just good trekking days and peaceful himalayan scenery. It’s the kind of timing that lets you enjoy the walk as much as the destination.

  • Short Makalu Base Camp Trek in Spring Season: Spring runs from March to May and adds color to the trail. Rhododendron forests bloom, the weather stays mild, and the whole region feels alive. It’s a great season if you love nature and relaxed walking days. Wildlife is more active, and the mix of flowers and snowcapped peaks makes the journey utterly beautiful.
  • Short Makalu Base Camp Trek in Autumn Season: Autumn lasts from September to November and is famous for its clear skies and favorable weather. The trails are dry, the views are sharp, and the weather stays steady, making it perfect for trekkers who want smooth conditions and stunning mountain scenery.

Food/Meal during the Short Makalu Base Camp trek

Meals on the Short Makalu Base Camp Trek are simple, warm, and filling, just what you need after long trekking days. Most meals are prepared in local teahouses or lodges using fresh and locally available ingredients.

For breakfast, you can expect items like porridge, eggs, toasts, pancakes, Tibetan bread, or chapati, along with tea or coffee. Lunch and dinner usually include Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) which is also the national dish of Nepal. Other options for dinner are noodles, fried rice, pasta, soups, momos, and seasonal vegetables. Dal Bhat is a favorite because it’s nutritious and comes with unlimited refills in many places.

As you go higher, the menu becomes simpler, but the food stays hot and comforting. You can also enjoy ginger tea, lemon tea, and black tea, which help you to keep warm in the cold mountain air. The meals may be basic, but they give you the energy and warmth you need to enjoy every step of the trek.

Accommodation facility during the Short Makalu Base Camp Trek

Accommodation on the Short Makalu Base Camp trek is simple, cozy, and practical, just right for a remote mountain journey. You will stay in local teahouses and small lodges, run by friendly mountain families who welcome trekkers with warm hospitality.

Rooms are mostly twin sharing, with basic beds, blankets, and pillows. In lower villages, you may find attached bathrooms, while higher up the trail, shared bathrooms are more common. Don't expect luxury, but you will always have a clean place to rest after a long walk.

In the evenings, the common dining area becomes the heart of the lodge, where trekkers gather for hot meals and tea. The quiet nights, cool mountain air and simple comfort make the stay a memorable part of the Makalu trekking experience.

The Short Makalu Base Camp difficulty

The Short Makalu Base camp trek is best described as a bit challenging but totally doable if you’re reasonably fit and enjoy long walks. You don’t need climbing skills or technical training, but you should be ready for steady uphill walks and full trekking days.

Most days, you will walk up to 4-7 hours, sometimes longer at higher altitude where the air feels thinner and your pace naturally slows down. The trail goes through forests, open pastures, and rocky sections and while it’s not extreme, it does ask for good stamina and patience.

What really makes this trek tougher is how remote and quiet it is. Facilities are basic, villages are few, and that’s actually part of the charm. If you are comfortable with simple lodges, changing weather, and taking things one step at a time, the short Makalu Base Camp trek is challenging in a good way!

Travel insurance for short Makalu Base Camp Trek

Travel insurance is very important for the short Makalu Base Camp trek. The trek goes through remote areas at high altitude, so it’s wise to be prepared for unexpected situations like minor injuries, sickness, or flight delays.

A good travel insurance should cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and high altitude trekking (up to 5000 meters is recommended for Makalu Base Camp). It’s also helpful if it includes lost baggage or trip cancellations, just in case plans change.

Getting travel insurance gives you peace of mind, letting you enjoy the mountains without worry. Most guides and agencies including us at Nepal Trekking Routes, strongly recommend it for everyone before starting the trek.

Altitude sickness and remedies during the short Makalu Base Camp Trek

Since the short Makalu Base Camp trek takes you up to 4800 meters, there is a chance of altitude sickness. It usually happens when your body doesn’t gain enough time to adjust with the thin air of the trail. Common symptoms of altitude sickness include: nausea, dizziness, headache, vomiting, trouble sleeping, shortness of breath, lack of appetite etc.

To prevent it, ascend slowly and take regular breaks. Drink plenty of water, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol. Many trekkers carry medications but it should only be taken after consulting a doctor.

If symptoms appear, it’s important to rest, descend if necessary, and seek help from your guide. Trekkers are also advised to listen to their bodies and not push too hard. Following these precautions ensures you can enjoy the trek safely while taking in the stunning views of Makalu and the surrounding Himalayas.
