Mustang is one of the remotest districts of Nepal that joins with the Tibetan plateau. The geographical and cultural feature of Upper Mustang is similar to that of Tibet. People here speak Tibetan languages and follow Tibetan Buddhism. The lower belt of Mustang is inhabited by culturally rich Thakali people who are renowned for their Thakali cuisines and locally brewed apple brandy. Jomsom, the headquarters of Mustang district, and Kag Beni are two famous Thakali towns lying on the bed of Kali Gandaki River.

The region is storehouse of Buddhist and Bon culture. Many archaeological findings have been discovered in the past decade including Mustang caves, ancient Tibetan scripts, mummified human bodies, rare stupas.

Mustang is home to Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Annapurna (8091m) Himalayan peaks, seventh and tenth highest mountain in the world. It is also home to Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.

The elevation ranges from 1,372 to 8,167 meters and entire upper Mustang trekking areas lies within Annapurna Conservation Area. The area is rich in rare species and ecological ranging from snow leopard, musk deer, Tibetan gazelle, and many medicinal and aromatic plants.

There are several trekking routes available in Mustang region, depending on whether you want shorter or longer routes. Annapurna Round trekking is probably the most popular one followed Jomsom Trek, Muktinath Trek, Upper Mustang Trek and Poonhill Trek. One of the highlights of trekking in this region is the crossing of Thorang La pass located at an altitude of 5416m and the visit to Chumig Gyatsa or Mukinath temple, which is one of the sacred shrine in the Himalayas. Upper Mustang on the other hand is still a restricted area so trekkers are required to obtain a special permit to trek here. Upper Mustang is famous for its capital Lo Mangthang, Buddhist Gompas and whitewashed walls and medieval palaces.
