Chulu East Peak climbing takes you to the top of a 6,000 m+ peak of Manang Valley. Chulu East Peak (6,584 m) is one of the two Chulu Peaks with Chulu West Peak (6,059 m). This peak connects Annapurna Himalayan Range and Damodar Himal (6,042 m).

It is situated between the Marsyangdi River headwaters and Mesokanto La Pass (5,099 m). Although you can do Chulu East Peak climbing alone, it is most often combined with Thorung La Pass trek. Hence, it is a wonderful combination of  high pass trek and peak climbing in Nepal.

The snow capped peaks of Annapurna Massif (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri Massif (8,167 m) and Mananslu (8,163 m) region are seen at the most splendid form. Mt. Gangapurna, Mt. Tilicho, Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), Mt. Muktinath, etc. also visible during this trip.

The Chulu East Peak climbing route runs through Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). Therefore, the large variety of wildlife and vegetation make this adventurous journey more of lifetime experiences!

The Thakali, Gurung and Bhotia villages located at the high altitude are the cultural beauties of Annapurna region. The famous ancient Braga Monastery of Manang and Muktinath Temple of Mustang are the most notable cultural sites. Chulu Peak climbing combined with Annapurna Circuit trek lets you have the firsthand knowledge of lifestyle, culture and tradition of the Manangese people.

The hundreds of Buddha statues of Braga Monastery; the natural flame and the 108-watersprouts of Muktinath Temple are the most striking features. It begins from the Marsyangdi River Valley and ends at the Kali Gandaki River Valley.

Exploration of the Lake City Pokhara is another added beauty of Annapurna Circuit trek, Chulu East Peak climbing. The scenic flight to Pokhara from Jomsom prizes you with the aerial view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri as well as Manaslu region Trek.

Chulu East Peak Climbing Difficulty

Chulu East Peak climbing difficulty up to the base camp is moderate type because you follow the most frequented trail of Annapurna Round trek. Then, the journey moves higher towards High Camp and Summit is quite difficult.

The trail further is steep and ice-covered so, slippery that in some sections you need to take help of climbing gears. You have to cross a few gorges between High Camp and Chulu East Peak Summit as well. Descent is also challenging as there is chance of muscle aches due to steep downhill trail. You must be quite careful to avoid any possible mishap!

After you complete Chulu Peak climbing, you move along the Annapurna Circuit trek route via Thorung La Pass (5,416 m). Although a non-technical pass, Thorung La Pass trek is considered to be challenging as you have to gain approx. 1,000 m elevation within a day!

The most responsible factor for contributing to Chulu East Peak climbing package is altitude. You spend most of the time above 2,500 m. As soon as you move higher than the given height, there is possibility of altitude sickness.

A few days should be spent on the tented camp that you cannot have the choice of food and accommodation services. You have to compromise with the food prepared by the crew and sleep in the tented camp.

Most of Chulu Peak climbing package begins from Beshisahar, but we have started it from Chame. That’s why, there is change in the Chulu East Peak climbing itinerary.  However, it is always a matter of customization. Don’t worry Nepal Trekking Routes is always resilient to make the necessary change in the proposed itinerary. Just be frank about your comfortable while booking this trip with us!

Chulu East Peak Climbing Cost

Chulu East Peak climbing cost depends upon a few aspects associated with this peak climbing in Nepal package. The duration, services of food and accommodation, mode of transportation and trekking permits are the most influential factors.

Chulu East Peak climbing itinerary can be shortened or extended, no matter! You can skip Thorung La Pass trek and do this peak climbing alone. You can start this package right from Beshisahar, the gateway to Annapurna Circuit trek.  And even from Muktinath, you can add a few days to the proposed itinerary to explore the Gurung and Magar ethnic villages of Annapurna region trek.

While doing Chulu Peak climbing, you spend more days in hotels or tea houses while a few in the tented camp. Annapurna Circuit trek is recognize for the best quality food from the Nepali typical Dal Bhat to Continental and Chinese. You have large items of cuisines while spending night at the tea houses or lodges.

But, you don’t have much choice while spending night at the tented camp. You have to eat up the food prepared by the crew and sleep in the campsite.

Mode of transportation also plays a vital role in determining the overall Chulu East Peak climbing cost. From Jomsom, you can either fly or drive to Pokhara and while returning from Pokhara to Kathmandu also, you have choice of roadway or airway. And, it is obvious that the flight cost is higher than the bus tickets. Moreover, if you hire private vehicles, they cost more than travelling in public buses.

Likewise, the cost of climbing gears also causes impacts on the cost of Chulu East  Peak climbing. If you purchase all the climbing gears, it costs higher whereas if you hire some, the cost is minimized.

Chulu East Peak Climbing Permit Cost

Besides, TIMS Card and ACAP Entry Permit, you also need Chulu East Peak climbing permit for this Nepal Trekking trip. As it is one of the NMA trekking peaks, you need to take a peak climbing permit from the respective authority.

The cost of Chulu East Peak climbing permit is different in different seasons. Spring is the best time for peak climbing in Nepal. Hence, the cost of peak climbing permit is higher. Autumn is the second best season for Chulu Peak climbing, so, the cost is lower than in spring.

Similarly, winter and summer is comparatively less favorable season for peak climbing trip. Therefore, the cost is totally different from spring and autumn.

NMA itself issues the climbing permits for 27 peaks authorized to it by the Nepal Government. To get the permits, you have to submit the following documents:

  • Copy of passport having at least 6 months’ validity
  • Two passports sized photos
  • Fees in either US Dollars or Nepalese Currency
  • Rough itinerary of the region you are trekking around
  • Sometimes you may have to wait for more than normal duration.

You have to pay the following rates for getting peak climbing permit from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA):

S.N. Season Cost in USD
1 Spring (March – May) 400
2 Summer (June – August) 70
3 Autumn (September – November) 200
4 Winter (December – February) 70

Based on your arrival time, a representative from Nepal Trekking Routes will reach Kathmandu International Airport [TIA] to welcome and receive you. You will then be escorted to your hotel where you can refresh and relax. Overnight in Kathmandu.

This day is allocated for Kathmandu sightseeing tour and trek preparation. Our tour guide takes you to 4 of the 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Patan Durbar Square, the Monkey Temple, Pashupatinath Temple and Bouddhanath Stupa will be visited.

When you return to the hotel, the team leader meets with you and tells you all about Chulu East Peak climbing itinerary. This is also time for managing climbing gears: some by purchasing and other by hiring. Don’t worry we help you manage them at the most reasonable cost.

As Chulu East Peak (6,584m) lies in Manang Valley, you follow the trail of Annapurna Circuit trek. Therefore, you can begin it from Besisahar but we manage driving services up to Chame from Kathmandu. From Besisahar, the vehicle moves further along the bumpy and dusty off-road up to Chame, the district administrative center of Manang district.

In the beginning, you walk along the Marsyangdi River banks and then dense forests to cross Telkhu and  Bhartang villages. After that, you cross a suspension bridge at Swarga Dwari (Heaven’s Gate) and then walk past dense pine forests and reach Dhukur Pokhari. Moving further through the sandy trail, you end up today’s trekking at Pisang.

Walking through the dense pine and juniper forests, you reach Braga Village. Here, you visit the Braga Monastery, the oldest monastery of Manang. Inside the monastery, there are hundreds of Buddha statues. From the top of the monastery, the view of the surrounding is incredible!

Then, the trail continues through the cliffy areas and then stops at Manang Village. Although it is a Himalayan village, you can find all the modern amenities there from gift-shops to quality cafes.

From Manang, you leave Annapurna Circuit trek route and divert towards Chulu East Peak. Following the rocky trail, you walk past Ngawal Village, which is also a popular stop during Annapurna Circuit trek. Finally, you move towards Chulu East Peak Base Camp. Set up the tented camp and practise using techniques in the guidance of the Sherpa guide.

As today is the acclimatization day, move around the base camp so that you can have the splendid looks of the Himalayas and Manang Valley. In the daytime, learn to use climbing gears and some most effective techniques to beat the difficult section of peak climbing in Nepal.

Keep yourself fully hydrated and have enough food and rest to complete the peak climbing more comfortably.

Following the steep trail, you reach a changed altitude towards High Camp. As the trail is icy and steep, you should walk close to the team leader. Once you reach High Camp, the panorama is just WOW! Enjoy the sunset view of the Himalayas shining all around. In the remaining time, you can prepare for the final ascent to the summit.

The hiking to the Chulu East Peak begins immediately after the midnight to avoid the possible strong winds. Following the steep and icy trail, you ascend gradually across the gorges. Take some time to admire the splendid ice pyramids at the comfortable vantage points.

Once you are on top of the Summit, you will just wonder with the mesmerizing view of the peaks floating all above the clouds. Annapurna Massif (8,091m) will stand a few yards away from this peak!

Then, slowly with the help of the climbing gears, you trek down to the base camp. Take a complete rest at the base camp as you have already done Chulu East Peak climbing! You have already got the lifetime experiences!

Peak climbing in Nepal is sometimes disturbed due to the bad weather and heavy snowfall. Therefore, it is wise to keep at least a day in spare. Hmm…’s like preparing really big for something small!

Following the same trail you used a couple of days earlier, you trek down to Manang. You walk past Braga Village once more.

By crossing Letdar Village, you reach Thorung Phedi (the bottom of Thorung La Pass (5,416m). While walking through the rugged trail, you enjoy the breathtaking view of the Himalayas. Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho, Tarekekang and many more come into your sight.

From Letdar, you walk across the Kone Khola Valley and finally stop at Thorung Phedi. Visit the village so that you will prepare yourself for crossing Thorung La Pass (5,416m). It is the highest pass of the entire Round Annapurna trek.

You begin the trek quite earlier, possibly long before the dawn. Although a non-technical pass, it is not that easy to reach Thorung La Pass for which you have to cover almost 1,000m altitude. Making Thorung La Pass trek in winter is sometimes impossible due to the thick layer of the snow!

Once you ascend to the top, you feel the peace of mind as the colourful prayer flags have awesomely decorated the pass. It is here you realize the prize of hard work and patience! The scenery of the Marsyangdi River Valley and the Kali Gandaki River Valley including the snowcapped peaks including Dhaulagiri Massif (8,167m) is just fabulous!

Enjoying the precious memory, you slowly descend towards Muktinath, a famous pilgrimage site of Annapurna region. The trail may be slippery, so, you must be careful while walking through! Celebrate the victory of Chulu East Peak climbing and Thorung La Pass trek here with your fellow travellers and the crew!

Wake up early to visit Muktinath Temple which is crowded by thousands of pilgrims not only from Nepal but also from the Indian Sub-continent. The natural flame that never withers and the 108-watersprouts are the most striking features of this shrine. It is equally sacred for both the Hindus and Buddhists.

Then, you move ahead towards Jomsom, the administrative center of Mustang district. Walking along the Kali Gandaki River Valley as well as enjoying the Himalayas and apple orchards, you reach Jomsom. Here too, you can celebrate the trip as this is the last day of trekking in Annapurna Circuit region.

You have a choice to reach to Pokhara from Jomsom: by domestic flight or driving along Beni, the gateway to Upper Dolpo trek or Guerrilla trek. You can do as the itinerary allows you.

When you reach Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the leisure time, you can visit the interesting sites of the Lake City. If you fly from Jomsom to Pokhara, you have more time to explore the most touristic place of Nepal.

You can try boating on the Phewa Lake or some adventure sports activities like zip flying, paragliding or hot air ballooning in Pokhara. You must not miss the night life of the Lakeside!

As there is domestic flight connection between Pokhara and Kathmandu, you can fly just in 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can drive along the Prithvi Highway via Damauli, Dumre and Mugling.

When you arrive in Kathmandu, our crewmember relocates you to the hotel. In the leisure time, you can go for shopping the handicraft products of Nepal. In the evening, we call you for farewell dinner at a restaurant around Thamel Bazar. Enjoy the typical Nepali cuisines and cultural shows during the stay!
