Everest Base Camp Trek Overview

Everest Base Camp Trek is a must-do activity once in a lifetime! If you are an avid trekker, you definitely desire to trek to different Himalayan regions. And of course, Nepal comes top of your bucket list as it houses 8 of 14 eight-thousanders worldwide: Mt. Everest (8,848 m), the world’s highest peak in Nepal.

The Great Himalayan Trail (1,700 km) is one of the longest and highest trekking trails in the world. It extends from east to west of Nepal combining ten major sections. And the 8 eight-thousanders make up the respective major section of this Nepal trekking route that requires nearly 157 days to complete.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp takes you to the closest possible place of the world’s highest point. Mt. Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) gives you the lifelong memory of the Great Himalayas looming on a row. Kalapatthar (5,550 m), the best vantage point of the Everest region is the only place from where you see the Everest Summit!

One question that comes in everyone’s mind is: “Can I see the Everest Summit from its base camp?” To your utter surprise, you can’t see it from the base camp. You can see Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Cho Oyo, Mt. Amadablam, Mt. Pumori, and many others instead. To see the panoramic view of the Everest Peak, you need to hike to Kalapatthar the following morning.

The Sherpa settlement areas, lush rhododendrons, alpine forests, and amazing landscapes are equally rewarding. Everest region used to be the residential region of Rai ethnic communities in the past. Nevertheless, nowadays, the Sherpa people are the residents of this region. Therefore, it is also called the Sherpa Capital as well. The ancient monasteries, mani walls and chortens decorated by prayer flags and wheels are the cultural attractions of the best Everest base camp trek.

How to Begin EBC Trekking?

To do the epic trek to Everest Base Camp, you need to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. The 30-minute flight gives you the best aerial view of the Everest region. The lush valleys, dense forests, and snow-capped peaks come into your sight. From Lukla, Tenzing Hillary Airport, you formally begin this trek through the Sherpa villages near Sagarmatha National Park.

Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep are the stopovers. All these places have hotels and lodges that serve with basic facilities of food and accommodation.

Gorakshep is the last settlement area before the Everest Base Camp trek, and it used to be the original base camp till the 1953 Everest Expedition. You spend a night at this village because it is the transition between EBC and Kalapatthar. This is the highest place on Earth that one can go without any permit and cost.

After getting the lifelong experience of reaching the base camp of Mount Everest, you trek down to Pheriche. After the next two days (Namche Bazaar and Lukla), you fly back to Kathmandu enjoying the aerial view of the soaring peaks.

Everest Base Camp Trekking Itinerary

The Everest trek itinerary ranges from 5 days to 21 days and lovers even. The itinerary of any tour or trek package depends upon different aspects like time, cost, and destination. If you have a short holiday, 5 days will be enough to observe the natural and cultural wonders of the Everest region.

You know trekking to the Himalayas is entertaining and unforgettable if you do it leisurely. Planning an Everest Base Camp trek for a short time may be a little uncomfortable. As you have to traverse above 2,500 m, altitude sickness may affect you sometimes.

The Everest Base Camp trek itinerary can be extended and cut short as other trip packages. The Everest Gokyo Lake trek rewards you with an opportunity to see the six glacial lakes interconnected with one another. Likewise, if you want to experience the most challenging trekking in Nepal, the Everest Three High Passes trek is the ultimate package.

You can also do EBC via Jiri, and Dolakha. Jiri Everest Base Camp trek is almost one week longer than the traditional Everest base camp trip. This trek is an opportunity to follow the footprints of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The duo Hillary and Norgay used this route to do the 1953 Everest expedition.

Don’t worry about the right itinerary! Because Nepal Trekking Routes are always there for you to find the best package at the most reasonable cost. Reach out to us at Nepal Trekking Routes.

Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty

While planning this trek, you might think about the Everest Base Camp trek difficulty. For this, you should consider a few components related to trekking. Trekking hours, altitude, trail conditions as well as food and accommodation are some of them.

You need to walk along the rugged trails located above 2,500 m for about 5/6 hours every day. Walking along such tracks might be difficult for beginner trekkers.

Everest region is a popular trekking in Nepal. There are many tea houses, hotels, and lodges on the stopovers. It means you don’t have to worry about food and accommodation facilities in this trek. Annapurna Base Camp trek and EBC trek are popular for comparatively better food and accommodation facilities.

The Everest trekking trail of the last section of the Everest Base Camp trek is a little rough. As it lies above 5,000 m, the trail remains wet and slippery as well as snow-covered most of the time. Therefore, you must be a bit more cautious while walking from Gorakshep to EBC and Kalapatthar.

Altitude is the only factor that makes Everest Base Camp trek difficult something to consider. Most of the time is spent above 2,500 m which means you may suffer from altitude sickness. However, you can prevent this by following some precautions like these:

  • Keep yourself completely hydrated.
  • Walk slowly by taking enough rest in the middle of the Everest trek.
  • Have enough food and sleep.
  • Keep the first aid kit box in the backpack.
  • Talk with the team leader as soon as you feel uncomfortable.
  • Everest base camp trek with Base camp sleeping

Everest Base Camp trek with Base Camp Sleeping is an incredible adventure that takes you to the highest peak in the world. The trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is the gateway to the Khumbu region. From there, you will trek through lush valleys, high passes, and Sherpa villages to reach the majestic Base Camp of Mount Everest. Along the way, you will get to experience spectacular views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

At the Base Camp, you will be able to spend the night in a comfortable sleeping tent and enjoy the spectacular sunrise from the comfort of your sleeping bag. You will also have the opportunity to explore the high altitude moraines and glaciers in the area. After your time spent at Base Camp, you will return to Lukla and take a flight back to Kathmandu.

Overnight at Everest Base Camp trek is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with lifetime memories. The trek is suitable for both experienced and novice trekkers and can be completed in around 16 days. So don't wait any longer and start planning your Everest Base Camp trek with Base Camp sleeping with Nepal Trekking Routes.

EBC Trek Cost/Price

Everest Base Camp trek cost is relative to many other factors associated with this. The trekking duration, number of guides/porters, permits, mode of transportation, and services are the major ones.

It is natural that the “longer the itinerary, the higher the cost!” and vice versa. As it is completely a tea house trekking, you don’t need more than a professional guide. Hence, you don’t have to pay unnecessarily extra budget.

TIMS Card and Sagarmatha National Park  Entry Permit are the legal documents required for the Everest Base Camp trek. TIMS Card cost is USD 10 for an organized Nepal trekking while USD 30 for all trekkers.

EBC trek begins from Lukla, Tenzing Hillary Airport. You can fly from Kathmandu to Lukla in just 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can use roadway transportation from Kathmandu to Phaplu and trek to Lukla as well. Roadway transportation cost is lower than air, but it adds to the itinerary of the trek.

Itinerary

An itinerary serves as a general outline of your travel plan. It is flexible and can be adjusted according to your interests and preferences in consultation with your trekking guide. This allows for more personalized and enjoyable experience, accommodating any spontaneous changes or new activities you might wish to include during your Everest base camp trek

Due to the unpredictable weather condition flight to Lukla and return to Kathmandu is not always guaranteed. So it’s advisable to plan for some extra day in your itinerary to accommodate potential delays or international flight missing. Otherwise use Helicopter service which is more reliable option with cost of USD 450 PP.

Essential Information

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness which is also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a major concern for the trekkers trekking to the Everest base camp trek. The trekking journey of EBC starts from Lukla( Tenzing Hillary airport) at an altitude of 2,846 m then it takes you to the maximum altitude of Kala Patthar which is situated at 5,545 m.

Due to the altitude gain when reaching your dream destination Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters) and the iconic viewpoint of Mount Everest, Kala Patthar, there is a high risk of altitude sickness. This occurs when the body does not acclimatize adequately to the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes.

Altitude sickness can be cured easily in its early stages. Still, if it progresses to severe conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and if not treated immediately then it can lead to serious health complications.  Therefore it is extremely important to know the symptoms of altitude sickness and its preventive measures before embarking on the Everest base camp trek.

Symptoms of Altitude sickness(AMS)

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath with exertion

Preventive measures to avoid altitude sickness on Everest base camp trek

  • Drink plenty of water, juice, tea, and coffee to stay hydrated during the trek

  • Take enough acclimatization days for your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Take a balanced diet of foods which are easily digestible and try to avoid meat product

  • Say no to alcohol and smoking during the trek

  • Taking Diamox before heading for the trip can reduce the chances of altitude sickness.

  • Sleep enough and get proper rest

  • Avoid doing heavy exercise during the trip

  • Pay attention to early symptoms of altitude sickness and communicate with your trekking guide if you feel discomfort

  • Avoid rapid ascents and Be prepared for varying weather conditions with appropriate clothing and gear.

Everest Base Camp Trek Weather

Your trekking journey for the Everest base camp trek starts from Lukla and ends in the Everest base camp. At the higher altitude region, the temperature can be extremely cold, and adverse weather conditions can be expected. Certain seasons of the year offer more favorable weather for trekking. Therefore it is important to plan your trek with an understanding of the weather patterns which helps to make your trip safe and comfortable.

Peak Season or Best time for the Everest base camp trek

Spring season(March, April, and May):  Spring which spans from March to May is considered one of the best times to trek Everest Base Camp trek. As winter ends, temperatures start to rise gradually in spring. During the day the temperature remains moderate whereas at the nighttime the temperature remains chilly.

We can expect greenery everywhere, and high-altitude forest areas covered by vibrant rhododendron flowers make the Everest base camp trekking routes mesmerizing and joyful.

During spring the tea house starts to operate at full capacity. The temperature inside the tea house remains moderate. You can find lots of trekkers on the trekking route heading for the Everest base camp trek. The clear view of the sky makes it possible to see the panoramic view of the breathtaking landscape and snow-peak mountains.

Autumn Season (September, October, and November): Autumn is another ideal time for trekking and climbing in Khumbu Region. Many trekkers prefer to trek in this season due to moderate temperature conditions. The temperature is neither too hot nor too cold during the day and night time.

The trail path becomes busy due to the huge number of trekkers heading for the Everest base camp trek and other trekking destinations inside the Everest region. Trekkers can enjoy crystal-clear views of the world's highest mountain, Everest, as well as other peaks such as Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Pumori, Baruntse, Nirekha Peak, Ama Dablam, Kangtega, Thamserku, Mera Peak, and many more.

Additionally, during the autumn season, Nepal's biggest festivals Dashain and Tihar take place. If you plan your visit then you will get the opportunity to participate in these festivals with local people.

Off-season for the Everest base camp trek

Winter season(December, January, and February): Trekking in the winter season is challenging due to extremely cold temperatures. The temperature at the high altitude areas can be unbearable and due to heavy snowfall, it makes the trail path icy and difficult to walk on.

Trekking in the winter requires good quality and sufficient amounts of gear and clothing items. Also if you are planning for trekking in the winter then make sure to have the extra days so that you can trek when the weather starts to clear. Moreover, trekking in early December and in late February will be the best idea.

Monsoon season (June, July, and August): The monsoon season, spanning from June to August, is perfect for agriculture in Nepal. However, it is considered as an off-season for trekking in Nepal. Continuous rainfall and forming of dark clouds obstruct the view of the mountain peak and beautiful landscape. It is challenging to predict weather conditions during this time.

The risk of landslides and floods increases significantly due to heavy rainfall. Roads are often blocked, and trekking routes become muddy and slippery, posing a risk of falls and injuries to trekkers.

Therefore we do not suggest trekking during the month of the Monsoon season, instead, you can choose short and easy treks like Ghorepani poon hill, and Nagarkot view trek in this season.

Weather Condition

While doing Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season, you have to be ready for frequent changes in weather conditions. In the monsoon season, the Everest Region remains cool in the mornings and nights while warmer in the daytime.

The average temperature of the region ranges from 22ºC in the daytime to -5ºC at night. Although the weather remains unpredictable during the monsoon season, it does not rain all the time.

Rainclouds may obstruct the scenic beauty of the gorgeous Himalayas, lush valleys, and green hills in the monsoon season. However, Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season is the best time for witnessing the most pleasant scenery of the Himalayas and the skies. After the rainfalls, the skies and the surroundings look amazingly refreshing. This is the right moment everyone loves to witness at least once in a lifetime!

While in Everest Trek in Monsoon, we advise you to wear layered clothes to adjust in changing weather conditions. As it rains all of a sudden, you had better wear waterproof clothes as the outermost layer.

Flight Condition

Flight condition is one of the challenges of Everest Base Camp Trek in the Monsoon Season. All of a sudden, the skies might be covered by rain clouds that cause poor visibility.

Lukla Airport, also called Tenzing Hillary Airport is the only airport to begin Everest Base Camp Trek and Gokyo Lakes Trek.

The thick fog and rain clouds might frequently disturb the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flights.

Thus, it is wise to keep a few days extra for doing Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season.

Trekking Trail Condition

The best time for Everest Base Camp Trek is either spring (March, April, and May) or autumn (September, October, and November).

During the peak seasons of Everest Trek, the trail condition remains comparatively busy. International trekkers from all over the world prefer doing Everest Base Camp Trek in either of the peak seasons.

Trail condition is another challenge of Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season. As it frequently rains in this season, the trail remains muddy and slippery.

You have to be more careful while ascending or descending through the steep trails during the monsoon season.

Next, leeches and bugs also create some kind of challenge during the Monsoon season trekking to Everest Base Camp.

Most of the trails of EBC Trek lie within the Sagarmatha National Park forests. These forests remain damp with wild weeds during the monsoon season. And these insects are more active in the wet season causing more challenges to the trekkers.

Nevertheless, you can take a few precautions to fight against the challenge of leeches and bugs. Wear long-sleeved clothes and carry a handy bug repellent to get rid of these insects. Regularly check if any of these parasites are about to attack you.

Trekkers Population

Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season is the best package for trekking in Nepal for those who prefer less crowded trekking trails.

As very limited trekkers make Everest Base Camp Trek in the rainy season, the trails remain far less busy. You can enjoy the full vistas despite the threats of rain and fog.

At a glance, it seems as if the entire Everest Region is only yours because you don’t see many other fellow trekkers.

Fewer travelers mean that you can befriend the trekkers from other parts of the world. In a sense, Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season is a way to expand your personal and professional bonding as well.

Scenic Attraction

The most beautiful reward of the Everest Base Camp Trek in the Monsoon Season is scenic attraction. Although it rains without prior warning, the scenery after the rain stops is so attractive that no words can describe them in words.

The skies look freshening after the rainfalls and the entire surrounding looks as if burning to welcome you there. The snowcapped peaks glitter in the sun's rays after the rainfall stops.

The lush valleys, icefalls, glacial lakes, glaciers, and green forests combined with the blue skies are beyond description. I think we need William Shakespeare or Spencer or Homer to reflect the beauty of the Everest Region after rainfalls in words!

Food and Accommodation

Another charm of Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season is the easy management of food and accommodation during the trip. No matter how large your group size is, food and accommodation management remains the game of the left hand!

The number of trekkers remains very few in the Monsoon season trekking to the Everest. So, you don’t have to worry about food and accommodation services. You can even find the services on arrival at the teahouses or lodges in Everest Region.

You know, sometimes you might even get some discounts on food and accommodation services while on EBC Trek in Monsoon Season!

As usual, Everest Base Camp Trek in Monsoon Season is fully teahouse trekking in Nepal. It is the best time for a leisurely trip to the base camp of Mount Everest (8,848.86m).
